Rainwater Harvesting

Landscape Irrigation
Integrated Design Approach
Plants love rainwater and it is the ideal source for irrigation. Rain naturally fertilizes plants (with nitrogen and sulfur) while at the same time flushing out harmful salts from the soil. Rainwater does not contain potential toxins and chemicals from water treatment plants or municipal underground pipes.

Rainwater harvesting not only reduces dependence on ground water and the amount of money spent on water, but also reduces off-site flooding and erosion by holding rainwater on the site. If large amounts of water are held in highly perviouse areas (areas where water penetrates easily), some of the water may percolate to the water table. Rainwater is a clean, salt-free source of water for plants.
Passive Rainwater Harvesting features such as landscape holding areas store water in the soil for direct use by the plants. Concave depressions planted with grass or plants serve as landscape holding areas, containing the water, increasing water penetration, and reducing flooding.

Rainwater Harvesting for Landscaping is appropriate for large scale landscapes such as parks, hotels, schools, commercial sites, parking lots, apartment complexes, green houses and small scale residential landscapes. Designs range from simple gravity fed systems to complex systems incorporating pressurized pumps and holding tanks.
